The unforgettable founder of the "Rent Is Too Damn High" political party intends to fight the eviction notice he's been served.
According to the New York Daily News, Jimmy McMillan's landlord, Lisco Holdings LLC, is trying to kick him out of the rent-controlled East Village apartment where he reportedly pays $872 per month. The Daily News adds that Lisco Holdings alleges that McMillan permanently resides in Brooklyn, not in the one-bedroom apartment they rent to the 68-year-old.
McMillan, who told the Daily News that his Brooklyn address is simply an office, filed a complaint in Brooklyn Federal Court:
McMillan’s two-page complaint says landlord Lisco Holdings LLC did not comply with an order from the Housing Court in 2009 to give him a new key after locking him out of the building .
They never gave me a damn key, he said, so he obtained a new one on his own.
Insisting that his landlord lacks "the authority to evict [him]," McMillan also claims that they won't accept his attempts at payment because they're trying to eliminate him and similar tenants so they can increase the rent significantly.
McMillian, who the Daily News notes is serving as his own attorney, also seeks monetary damages totaling $1.3 million.
