Yesterday’s tragic attack at the Paris office of French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo left 12 people dead, and has rocked the comedy world in particular. Hebdo was no stranger to controversy, but comedians toe and cross that fine line between what is funny and what is just plain wrong all the time. As Conan O’Brien so aptly put it last night, however, “it’s a right some people are forced to die for.”

Both O’Brien and The Daily Show’s Jon Stewart offered fitting tributes last night, pointing out the senselessness of the tragedies and expressing sadness that performing comedy has become, as Stewart said, “an act of courage.” And equally fittingly, they moved on to doing what they do best: talking about things like Nazi cows.
