American Sniper is set to have the best January opening ever, which is pretty surprising, considering it's not full of Marvel superheroes or set in a dystopian future. The true story of Navy SEAL Chris Kyle just got a ton of Oscar nominations and an A+ rating on Cinemascore, which definitely doesn't hurt.
The Bradley Cooper war drama, directed by Clint Eastwood, took in $30.5 million on Friday. It originally opened in just four cities in December for a limited run. Clearly, a theater expansion was the right move. It will probably hit $75 or $80 million by the end of the weekend. At a very distant number two, The Wedding Ringer earned $7 million Friday night.
