Jon Stewart Calls Eric Garner Decision “All Harm, No Foul”

Jon Stewart opened last night's "Daily Show" with a raw, heartfelt monologue about the Eric Garner decision.

The shock and dismay felt over the decision not to indict the police officer whose chokehold killed Eric Garner this past summer was apparent everywhere yesterday, from Garner’s mother to prominent Twitter voices to the Justice Department. It also reached Jon Stewart and The Daily Show, who had to start filming just moments after the decision was made.

Stewart opened the show with this somber monologue about what had just happened, and the many ways it differed from what happened with Michael Brown’s death at the hands of police officer Darren Wilson in Ferguson, Mo. “We are definitely not living in a post-racial society,” Stewart mused, “and I can imagine there’s a lot of people out there wondering, ‘How much of a society do we live in at all?’”

Stewart’s thoughtful response is truly a clear, coherent, and sober reflection on what has happened, and the completely dumbfounding ways in which American society continues to devolve. It’s more than a little depressing, but is definitely a must-watch.
