Four cities in the UK are going to see driverless cars on their roads next year, as the government looks to test out the new technology in the real world.

The government-backed organisation Innovate UK has announced that there will be trials in Greenwich in South London, Bristol, Milton Keynes and Coventry. Three different schemes are going to be tested, with the likes of Ford, Jaguar Land Rover and General Motors all involved.

And if that’s not enough of a sci-fi future for you, they won’t even necessarily look like cars. Catapult, who are running the scheme in Milton Keynes, will be trailing crazy looking driverless pods that look more like R2D2 than a Ford Fiesta.

Hopefully jet packs are next, right?
