The BBC have announced that Idris Elba’s loose cannon detective Luther will return for a fourth series.

After rumours started swirling earlier this week, it was confirmed that the show will return for a two-part miniseries, to be broadcast sometime in 2015. No other information has been released about the plot or returning characters, but it’s due to shoot around March next year.

Series creator Neil Cross said:

"We're putting the band back together; Luther is coming back where he belongs. Back to the BBC. Back to London. And back to work."

The new series is being co-produced with BBC America, so people are starting to suggest it might be some sort of lead-in or set up for the American remake of the series, which was also announced earlier this week.

However, it might just be that the show is one of BBC America’s highest rated programmes. Elba is currently just attached as executive producer of the American version, and not slated to star in it – though considering that without him, Luther is basically just ‘Generic Cop Who Plays By His Own Rules’, so some sort of crossover to make it stand out wouldn’t be the worst idea.

The new UK episodes will be filmed in London during March 2015, and will air later in the year.
