Officials in New York City say a grand jury is close to making a decision on whether or not an NYPD officer will be indicted for his role in Eric Garner's death. Garner, 43, died after officer Daniel Pantaleo placed him in a chokehold in Staten Island on Jul. 17.
CBS News reports that the grand jury heard testimony last week from an officer who is believed to be the last witness to Garner's death. Although the Staten Island district attorney declined to comment on the matter, CBS News notes that a decision is expected to come before year's end.
In August, Garner's death was ruled a homicide by the city medical examiner's office. Pantaleo and another officer were relegated to desk duty, while four emergency responders were suspended without pay. CBS News adds that the NYPD stripped Pantaleo of his gun and badge.
