The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund (a.k.a. CBLDF) is a non-profit that advocates for freedom of speech in comic books. Basically, the organization's mission is to ensure that you can read any comic you want, whenever you want, regardless of the content therein. Considering that many of my favorite comics have more sex, drugs, and violence than an episode of Boardwalk Empire, it's a job I'm thankful that someone is doing. (You can learn about it more here.)

While you might want to consider becoming a member regardless (you know, because the First Amendment is dope), the folks at the CBLDF have done a great job creating further enticements this holiday season. For instance, the organizations' Spirit of Giving fundraising drive offers donors the opportunity to receive amazing graphic novels, customized by their authors and illustrators. Of all these, the coolest has to be Ed Piskor's Hop Hop Family Tree slipcase set personalized with a sketch from Piskor himself.

I talked to Piksor earlier this week about the massive project, and I can say with all honesty that it's one of the coolest comics being written today. Piskor has made it his life's work to document the history of hip-hop as it evolved from a South Bronx subculture to massive global movement. And to say that he's done great job is an understatement: this is a truly encyclopedic history of early rap, complete with all the parties, drama, and sonic evolution, documented by an expert cartoonist. Oh, and did I mention that it's beautiful? The packaging is some of the best you'll see anywhere. To cop yours, head to the CBLDF website and poke around or click here
