NYPD Has Spent $428 Million in Settlement Money Over Past Five Years

Unsurprising, but still staggering.

An investigation into NYPD settlements has revealed that the department has shelled out close to $500 million in settlement money since 2009.

Following a Freedom of Information request for all civil rights lawsuits filed against the department, MuckRock received every case filed over the past five years. After rifling through the data, the website found that there have been upwards of 10,000 settlements with payouts ranging from $1 to $11.5 million during that span. Altogether, they add up to a stunning $428 million.

As Gawker points out, these findings are consistent with a 2010 Associated Press study which found that nearly $1 billion in settlement money had been spent during the 10 years that proceeded.
