Deadline is reporting that Marvel has set their sights on British national treasure Benedict Cumberbatch to play the title role in Dr. Strange, a comic about a neurosurgeon who becomes “Sorcerer Supreme” and defends the earth against various equally-menacing threats.

Joaquin Phoenix had been hinted at for the role, but he could not come to terms with Marvel on a deal. Cumberbatch’s star is rapidly rising, as the Emmy-winning star of Sherlock earned rave reviews for his performance in Star Trek Into Darkness and is getting Oscar buzz for his work in the upcoming movie The Imitation Game.

Scott Derrickson will direct the movie, which is currently slated to be released on July 8, 2016.
