Ben Affleck was on Real Time with Bill Maher last night, and it got heated. Affleck, Maher and author Sam Harris were debating over radical Islam. Affleck insisted that Maher and Harris were over-generalizing when they characterized the majority of Islam as violent.

"Hold on — are you the person who officially understands the codified doctrine of Islam? [Your characterization] is gross and racist. It's like saying, ‘Oh, you shifty Jew!'” Affleck argued. Harris, whose book End of Faith is about the problems with tolerating religious fundamentalism, also pointed out that you should be able to criticize a religion without being called a bigot. Affleck wasn't having it.

"It's the only religion that acts like the mafia — that will fucking kill you if you say the wrong thing, draw the wrong picture, or write the wrong book," Maher said. "Your argument is, ‘You know, black people, they shoot each other,'" Affleck said.

Watch the whole exchange above. Affleck's Gone Girl came out in theaters October 3.
