True, there's a definite lack of female-driven comic book movies in 2014. But most people forget that long before the X-Men or Spider Man appeared on the big screen, and even before Michael Keaton ever put on the batsuit, a female superhero starred her own big-budget film.
Her name was Supergirl (played by Helen Slater, below), and the 1984 movie is generally regarded as terrible. Now, 30 years later, another live-action Supergirl is in the works, this time for TV.
Warner Bros. Television is working with Greg Berlanti and Ali Adler, who wrote and produced on the superhero TV series No Ordinary Family to develop a new Supergirl show, The Hollywood Reporter reports. DC chief creative officer Geoff Johns is also reportedly involved in the project, which is still in the early stages.
There's no name for the show yet (apparently it won't be called Supergirl), and it's unclear if it will be a 30 minutes or one hour long. What is clear is that where Marvel is dominating the movie theaters, DC characters are a much bigger and growing presence on television, where Arrow, The Flash, Gotham and Constantine are all on the fall schedule.
The Supergirl comic book character was created in the late '50s, though The Hollywood Reporter says the show “will be a new interpretation of the Supergirl character and her story."
