Kurdish Fighters Are Custom Building Their Own Ridiculous Looking Tanks

They may look stupid, but they're far from it.

Kurdish soldiers in northern Syria may be outgunned and out-financed compared to Islamic State militants, but that hasn't stopped them being resourceful and converting lorries and tractors into fairly ridiculous looking homemade armoured vehicles and tanks.

Despite looking like something out of 'Wacky Races' or 'Mad Max', the People's Protection Units (YPG) and their custom built vehicles and heavy artillery are actually more useful than they may seem at first.

Published to Twitter over the past few months, and taken with seemingly low-grade quality smartphones, the images are a fairly stark reminder of the DIY warfare that still takes place in certain corners of the world.

They may look stupid, but they're far from it.

1.

Some are armoured personnel carriers or help to support infantry with medical assistance.

2.

And some of them are built for warfare.

3.

Although, clearly, they're not ideal substitutes for an actual factory built tank.

4.

But, you would much rather be inside one of these under heavy fire.

5.

Especially as they're highly effective against small arms fire and shrapnel.

6.

So, they may look like cartoon versions, but they're still the real deal (kind of).
