Authorities have formally charged the man suspected in the disappearance of University of Virginia student Hannah Graham

According to NBC News, Jesse Leroy Matthew, Jr. was arrested in Gilchrist, Texas yesterday afternoon. Matthew had previously been charged with reckless driving after fleeing police in Charlottesville, Va. last Saturday. The reckless driving charges were upgraded to abduction with intent to defile, and NBC News adds that the 32-year-old had been missing since last weekend.

Graham, 18, was last seen during the early hours of Sep. 13, when a surveillance camera captured her walking past a gas station in Charlottesville. She was also seen walking through a mall, where a man was reportedly seen placing his arm around her.

Despite making an arrest, Charlottesville Police Chief Timothy Longo acknowledged that this is just the beginning of the process. "This case is nowhere near over," Longo told NBC News. "We have a person in custody, but a long road ahead of us."
