Much like Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert had scheduled two weeks off for vacation beginning just before the Michael Brown shooting in Ferguson, Mo. Last night, Colbert returned (with Emmys/bookends in tow) to address the situation, and he took a decidedly different position than Stewart did on Tuesday.

Colbert suggested that we not rush to judge Darren Wilson “as a violent, racist cop who gunned down an unarmed black teenager.” After all, he points out, you could also argue that “he's a heroic police officer doing his job...by gunning down an unarmed black teenager.”

Furthermore, he suggested, “We don't know if this was racist, or even if racism still exists.”

Somehow, it doesn’t seem like he was being serious.
