Man Fatally Shot During Confrontation with LAPD

The man's mother said her son was on the ground following officers' orders when they opened fire.

Authorities say a man was shot and killed by police in Los Angeles last night. 

According to KTLA, the LAPD was summoned to the Florence neighborhood around 8:12 p.m. Less than 10 minutes later, police stopped 24-year-old Ezell Ford, and then reportedly opened fire following what the news station described as a "struggle."

LAPD spokeswoman Officer Sara Faden told KTLA that Ford was rushed to a hospital for surgery, but succumbed to his injuries. Ford's mother, Tritobia Ford, told KTLA that he was complying with officers' orders when they shot him. 

The LAPD is reportedly looking into the specifics of Ford's death.
