Johnny Depp’s Mustache May Be the Only Redeeming Feature of “Mortdecai”

The first trailer for "Mortdecai" promises Johnny Depp with a weird mustache, and very little else.

Johnny Depp’s movies have taken on a very strange tone of late. The actor seems committed to playing increasingly weird roles, with parts like a revived vampire (Dark Shadows), a dated caricature of a Native American (The Lone Ranger), and a sentient computer program (Transcendence) making up his most recent acting choices.

So considering all that, Depp’s decision to play a British spy with an absurdly manicured mustache in Mortdecai seems somewhat normal. The movie has a pretty deep supporting cast (Gwyneth Paltrow, Paul Bettany, Oliver Platt, Aubrey Plaza, Ewan McGregor, and Olivia Munn), so it would seem like this could be a hit.

The only problem, of course, is the Johnny Depp Rotten Tomatoes History suggests otherwise. Here are the scores of his last seven live-action starring vehicles:

  • Transcendence (2014): 19

  • The Lone Ranger (2013): 31

  • Dark Shadows (2012): 37

  • Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011): 33

  • The Rum Diary (2011): 50

  • Alice in Wonderland (2010): 51

  • The Tourist (2010): 20

Some quick math will tell you that Depp is averaging just over 34 out of 100 per movie, with a median score of 33. Either way, that’s pretty awful.

So, yeah, maybe don’t add Mortdecai to your calendars just yet?
