Disney was originally being modest for its opening weekend expectations for Guardians of the Galaxy -- $70, maybe $75 million. Now it's looking like the latest comic book epic will hit $100 million and have the best August opening ever. If it makes it, it'll be the second movie to hit $100 million this year (the other was Transformers: Age of Extinction). There have been twenty-seven total. Guardians also had the highest Thursday debut ever ($11.2).
On Friday, Scarlett Johansson thriller Lucy was far behind at number two with $5.7 million, a huge drop from its opening weekend. James Brown biopic Get on Up came in third. And we'd like to point out that this is Guardians star Zoe Saldana's third big opening—she also stars in Avatar and the new Star Trek franchise.
