A firefighter was killed after being trapped during a search for residents of a burning Brooklyn high-rise last night.

According to the New York Times, a statement from the mayor's office said that Lt. Gordon Matthew Ambelas was in the midst of searching for tenants of the Williamsburg building when fire blocked him into a bedroom. He was found unconscious by fellow firefighters, then rushed to Woodhull Medical Center, here he was pronounced dead.

The 40-year-old Ambelas, who the Times said had been a member of the FDNY for 14 years, was the city's first firefighter to perish in the line of duty in two years. Four additional people were injured by the fire, which was eventually controlled in about an hour.
