Scientists from Louisiana State Baton Rouge and the University of Kentucky have discovered a new species of cavefish for the first time in 40 years. The craziest thing about it? It has an anus right behind its head.
The fish, which scientists are calling Amblyopsis hoosieri (a.k.a. the Hoosier Cavefish) in reference to its home habitat of Indiana, is an eyeless species that lives in near complete darkness. The fish usually reach between 6-8 centimeters and have no pigment in their scales. Scientists say that even though it was just discovered, the species is already endangered.
