Samsung is already further ahead in the wearable tech game than some of its competitors, but that lead may grow next week when it launches a new smartwatch. According to CNET, the South Korean tech giant will announce a smartwatch running Google's Android Wear OS during Google's I/O developer conference next week.

The device will follow in the lead of Samsung's Gear brand of wearables, except that it will be running Google's new wearable-specific platform. Two versions of the smartwatch are expected—one powered by a Qualcomm chipset and one powered by a Samsung processor—though it's unclear which one will be debuted at I/O.

The company has not confirmed the report but a spokesperson told CNET that it is "committed to relentless innovation and new products are always in development."
