It can be a dicey business turning childhood stories into movies (see: Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day), so we are admittedly nervous about the iconic Paddington Bear becoming a feature film.
While it may only be one image, we’re at least relieved to know that much of what makes Paddington so great will remain intact. He’s still wearing both his signature raincoat and bucket hat, carrying his briefcase, and the bear himself at least somewhat resembles the book version.
This slimmed-down version of Paddington will be voiced by Colin Firth, giving him an air of dignity and eliminating the possibility that he might have a Peruvian accent (given, you know, that he’s from there). The film will co-star Nicole Kidman, Hugh Bonneville, Sally Hawkins, Jim Broadbent, Peter Capaldi, and Julie Walterswith, all in human form.
Directed by Paul King, whose work includes the cult-hit UK series The Mighty Boosh and the film Bunny and the Bull, Paddington Bear is slated for a December 12 US release.
