John Oliver has made a weekly habit of illuminating injustices going on across the country, and the world. Last night in honor of Pride Week, he took on the anti-homosexuality laws in Uganda.

To say these laws are horrific is, as Oliver says, akin to calling Stalin “a bit of a grump.” The laws actually state that it is illegal to be gay in Uganda. Period. If you are, you go to jail or are executed.

Part of the problem, Oliver points out, is that American Evangelicals are the ones who actually introduced these ideas and laws to Uganda less than a century ago. So…yikes.

You can see the entire powerful segment above, including an interview with a brave Ugandan gay rights activist who has somehow managed to avoid being thrown in jail forever.
