This morning, film company Wild Bunch announced the movies they’re bringing with them to the Cannes Film Festival in an attempt to secure funding, and there was one eyebrow-raising title on the list: a sequel to 2012’s well-received SpringBreakers.

The new film, tentatively titled Spring Breakers: The Second Coming will center around a new cast of wild young ladies, only this time they’ll be going up against a group of Christians trying to convert them by any means necessary. Wild Bunch co-chief Vincent Maraval told Screen Daily that “It’s not a direct sequel although there are allusions to some of the characters in the original.”

It’s much too early to make any prognostications about the film’s potential for success. After all, they have a writer (Irvine Welsh, who wrote Trainspotting and Filth), a director (Jonas Akerlund, who also directed Spun and Small Apartments), and nothing else. However, it’s a safe bet that given the success of the previous version there will be plenty of hype once production on this sequel ramps up.
