Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s “Project Greenlight” to Return

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are reviving their long-dormant HBO show "Project Greenlight."

After being away from HBO for 11 years and off TV entirely for nine, Project Greenlight is slated to return to HBO for a new season. The show is executive produced by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck and is a documentary following the search for a first-time director and chronicling the entire filmmaking process.

Both A-listers are very excited to have the show back on the air. From Affleck:

Project Greenlight was ahead of its time. Now that technology has caught up to the concept, we thought it was a perfect time to bring it back. A whole new generation of filmmakers has grown up sharing everything, and the next big director could be just an upload away. It is really great having Project Greenlight back at HBO.”

Damon, too, shares his friend’s enthusiasm for the project, especially as it relates to helping aspiring filmmakers earn mainstream recognition:

Project Greenlight works — careers have been launched and sustained as a direct result of this contest. Pete Jones, John Gulager, Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan are just a few of the PGL alums who've gone on to do great things in Hollywood, and Ben and I are really proud of that.”

While no timeline has been set out as to when we’ll see the finished product on HBO, we anticipate it will be a while. The show spans the entire lifespan of a movie, starting with a digital competition to choose the subject film, then following it all the way from pre-production and casting to principal photography, filming, and post-production.
