In the wake of the breaking news regarding Gareth Edwards signing on to direct a Star Wars spin-off movie to be released in late-2016, Legendary Pictures CEO, Thomas Tull, had this to say about the director’s future with the Godzilla franchise, courtesy of Shock Till You Drop:

“Gareth's filmmaking talent makes him one of his generation's most creative and visionary directors,” Tull said in a statement. “The plan has always been for Gareth to direct a different film before we started on another Godzilla, but who knew it would a Star Wars installment? We have a great plan in store for Godzilla fans and I am looking forward to seeing Gareth’s imprint on the Star Wars universe.”

Legendary put up most of Godzilla’s budget, and the plan is for the movie to spawn a multi-film franchise. As of right now, Edwards is still attached to those sequels, and apparently there was always a plan in place for him to take a break in between movies.

With his Star Wars film coming out late in 2016, the earliest you’ll see Godzilla back on the big screen is most likely the summer of 2018. Four years is a much longer break than most summer franchises get in between installments, but if Legendary is committed to Edwards’ vision, that’s the sacrifice that needs to be made.
