Apple's approach to design is notoriously precise and the company hopes others will follow suit. It has just made its " iOS Human Interface Guidelines," previously only available via its developer portal, downloadable for free in iBooks.

The book addresses aesthetics, user interface, language, and other key elements that make an iOS app design a success. Sample chapters include "Interactivity and Feedback," "Color and Typography," and "Terminology and Wording," in addition to handful of others themes. The guidelines also provide case studies and examples to help illuminate some of the important themes.

"Whether you’re redesigning an existing app or creating a new one, consider approaching the job in the way that Apple approached the redesign of the built-in apps," the guide pointedly suggests.
