A female student at a Connecticut high school has died after reportedly being stabbed to death by another student who asked her to go to the prom.

According to the Connecticut Post, 16-year-old Maren Sanchez was fatally stabbed by a 16-year-old boy after rejecting his offer to attend Jonathan Law High School's prom tonight. The attack occurred at the Milford, Conn. high school around 7:14 a.m. this morning, and Fox News reports that a teacher witnessed the male student strangle Sanchez—who had a boyfriend—then push her down the stairs and stab her when she declined him.

Despite attempts by teachers and emergency responders to revive Sanchez, she was pronounced dead at Bridgeport Hospital. The boy, whose name has not been released, was restrained by teachers until police arrived and he was taken into custody

The Connecticut Post adds that the school was placed on lockdown before classes were dismissed for the day at 9 a.m. The prom has been postponed indefinitely.
