An early morning fire at a Jersey Shore motel left four dead and eight injured, officials say.

The deadly blaze began at the Mariner's Cove Motor Inn at Point Pleasant, N.J. around 5 a.m. this morning, destroying much of the building and forcing people to jump to safety. There were 40 people staying at the hotel at the time, and authorities say at least 10 remain unaccounted for, though the possibility that they escaped has been considered. Several people staying at the hotel had been displaced by Hurricane Sandy.

The victims' names have not been released, but Ocean County Prosecutor Joseph Coronato said all three are males. An investigation into the fire's origin continues.
