Insane '50s Cap, anyone?

Captain America: The Winter Soldier isn’t even out yet, but that isn’t stopping Marvel from plotting the events of the next film in the series. With The Winter Soldier taking its cues from writer Ed Brubaker’s comic run, it only makes sense for a third movie to continue adapting stories from the comics. In an interview with Den of Geek, Winter Soldier writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely had this to say when asked about the next Cap flick:

McFeely: Oh yeah, you can probably predict some of the threads we would like to pick up again that we’ve laid out there. And we always go back to the comics and dive back in and look at anything we’ve missed in the last few years that might be relevant.

Psychotic 1950s Cap might sound odd to casual fans, but trust us, it’s a real thing. After WWII ended, Marvel Comics—then known as Timely Comics—still wanted to pump out Captain America stories, so they put him against the communists throughout parts of the ‘50s. This direction didn’t catch on like his battles against the Nazis, so the books were discontinued. Then in the ‘60s, Stan Lee revived the character as a member of the Avengers after he was thawed out of ice.

Fans were confused how Steve Rogers was trapped in ice since WWII, yet fought the communists in the ‘50s. To rectify this, writer Steve Englehart later explained that this was an entirely different Captain America in the '50s, named William Burnside. Unfortunately, the super soldier serum for the new Cap began to have psychotic side effects, warping him into a radical right-wing villain masquerading in the red, white, and blue tights. Since then, the two Caps have come to blows numerous times, giving the writers more than enough material to adapt for a movie.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier hits theaters on April 4.
