"True Detective" Was Almost Named "The Murder Ballads"

No subtlety in that name.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, True Detective director Cary Fukunaga reveals that he and series creator Nic Pizzolatto toyed around with calling the gritty crime drama a completely different name.

"I think Nic and I both liked this one version called The Murder Ballads," Fukunaga said, "but he was more in love with True Detective in terms of the broadness of the anthology. Since we were creating a brand, as much as we were creating a title for this series, we had to go more broad." As strange as it is to think of True Detective with a different name—especially one like The Murder Ballads—this is a pretty good fact for trivia nights, or something.

Check out the rest of the interview here, where Fukunaga goes into detail about the Yellow King mythology and that awesome six-minute tracking shot.
