The pilot for NBC’s Constantine adaptation just got a lot more interesting after Deadline broke the news that the network has hired Neil Marshall to direct the pilot episode. Marshall is best known for his directing work on The Descent and the famous “Blackwater” episode of Game of Thrones, one of the series’ highpoints.

Constantine is inspired by the character from DC Comics, who has starred in two separate comic book titles, the long-running Hellblazer and the recent self-titled Constantine. The pilot, much like the comics, will focus on John Constantine, a crass con-man who battles supernatural forces in between cigarette breaks.

Marshall brings the type of résumé this show needs. His work on The Descent proves that he’s more than capable of bringing the proper horror elements to the pilot, while his direction on “Blackwater” had one of the most impressive action scenes ever committed to television. The last piece of the puzzle is the casting of Constantine himself, which could make or break this potential series’ future.
