Great news: Solomon Northup's 1853 book 12 Years A Slave—which was adapted into an Academy Award-nominated film by Steve McQueen just last year—will be distributed as a learning tool to public high schools across America. The National School Boards Association has partnered with Fox Searchlight and Penguin Books to distribute copies of the film, the book, and an accompanying study guide to young students. The project was lead by television personality and radio host, Montel Williams

NSBA President David A. Pickler says the intent of the initiative is to provide "America’s public high school students the opportunity to bear witness to such an unrelenting view of the evils of slavery [and it's] essential toward ensuring that this history is never forgotten and must never be repeated.”

The book and film will begin being distributed to schools this coming September.
