Authorities in Montgomery County, Md. say a woman accused of fatally stabbing her two youngest children and wounding two others on Friday did so because she was trying to perform an exorcism.

Police say they found 28-year-old Zakieya L. Avery's four children on Friday morning after a neighbor called 911. The bodies of Zyana and Norell Harris—ages1 and 2—were discovered, while their 5 and 8-year-old siblings were hospitalized. Though officials declined to reveal why, exactly, they thought the murders were part of an exorcism ritual, police did say the neighbor initially called to report "suspicious activity" involving a knife.

Yesterday, Avery was charged with two counts of first-degree murder, as well as two counts of attempted first-degree murder. Another woman who lives at the Germantown home also faces murder charges.
