The businessman who slapped a crying toddler aboard a Delta Air Lines flight last February has been sentenced to eight months in federal prison.

Joe Rickey Hundley, 61, was seated next to 33-year-old Jessica Bennett and her 19-month-old son, Jonah, aboard a flight from Minnesota to Georgia. During the plane's descent, the child began to cry and Hundley reportedly ordered Bennett to "shut that n***** baby up" before slapping the boy in the face.

Hundley, who witnesses say appeared intoxicated, was arrested and charged with assault. In October, he pleaded guilty to simple assault, avoiding a trial and a conviction that likely would've landed in jail for up to a year. Though prosecutors recommended a six-month sentence, he was given eight due to a previous conviction for assaulting an old girlfriend.

During his sentencing, Hundley offered a meaningless apology to Bennett, who called him a "bully." Jail will not be kind to Hundley.
