According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gerard Butler is currently in talks with Alcon Entertainment to star in the studio’s upcoming remake of Point Break. If the deal goes through, Butler would play Bodhi, the part that Patrick Swayze made famous in director Kathryn Bigelow’s 1991 original version of the story. For the remake, Ericson Core, the cinematographer of The Fast and the Furious and 2003’s Daredevil, will serve as the director. Before this, his only other mainstream directing gig was 2006's Invincible, starring Mark Wahlberg, so this will be a high-profile test for him.

The article states that while that the main plot of the movie will remain intact, the story will focus on the world of international extreme sports, as opposed to the California surf culture that was the backdrop of the original. Apparently some changes are necessary.
