YouTube has just released it's list of videos for this year's YouTube Rewind that recognizes the best in a number of different categories. Leading the charge for 2013's list is Sony PlayStation, League of Legends and cyberstar, PewDiePie—each securing two slots each.
"One thing that's been proven is that things don't have to look expensive, for people to like, share and want to be a part of it."
Videos that make the cut are determined by different criteria although one would believe that views would be the only decider. Not so, according to YouTube's trends expert Kevin Allocca "Views are a big factor," he said in an interview with Complex prior to the Rewind announcement. "But people don't just watch the videos. They 'like', comment on them, share them around and make parodies. We take all of that into account when putting together the list."
Kevin also had a few tips for hopefuls wanting to create videos that can compete in the future. "One of the things we've seen—especially for this year—are things that are unexpected and that you don't see anyone else doing. They also invite interaction in some way." The most important note that Kevin Allocca highlighted however, was consistency with new content. "When you look at the more popular channels, you notice a couple of things," he says. "They make things regularly and there's quality across everything they do. When you look at someone like PewDiePie, you know what to expect every week. When a new album or video game comes out, people know that they can depend on their favorite channels to have something about it." When Allocca speaks about quality, he's not talking about blowing thousands of dollars on high-end cameras or production equipment but more providing a quality experience. "It's the quality of the message or the quality of the humor. One thing that's been proven is that things don't have to look expensive, for people to like, share and want to be a part of it."
