Apple and Samsung's retrial for patent infringement has cost the latter a lot of money, but even though Apple won about $930 million, they don't want to pay all the fees for their lawyers.
According to Reuters, a new filing by Apple reveals that the company paid its lawyers more than $60 million to beat out Samsung, and paid this amount between two different law firms. ,Morrison & Foerster, LLP handled the original accusations of Samsung infringing upon Apple's patents, while Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr, LLP defended Apple against Samsung's claims that Apple infringed on their patents. The company has asked U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh to order Samsung to pay at least $15 million of its lawyer fees, because, fuck it. "Apple's in-house attorneys managed this case to a very disciplined budget," attorney Rachel Krevans writes in the filing. "As a result of all of these efforts and reductions, the hours underlying the fees at issue are reasonable."
"Awarding fees to Apple 'flows quite naturally' from the jury's willfulness verdict as well as Samsung's extensive record of willful, deliberate, and calculated decisions to copy the iPhone, in blatant disregard for Apple's IP," Apple's attorneys said in its filing.
The fees not only take into account what the lawyers are being paid, but other expenses, such as transcriptions, discovery expenses, and translators.
