This Sunday, the lights applied to the Washington Monument this summer will go out. Anyone who figures they'll miss the illuminated monument need not worry, as this simply means that it's close to reopening.

National Park Service says that exterior repairs to the monument—which were sustained after an August 2011 earthquake—are 80 percent completed. Interior work, on the other hand, is 30 percent finished. Starting the week of Nov. 11, the scaffolding will start to be removed, a process the NPS figures will take three months to finish.

The Monument is currently slated to open next Spring, minus the lights, but better than ever.
