Yesterday, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced that the state would purchase 129 homes that were destroyed by Hurricane Sandy. "There are parcels along the water that really belong to Mother Nature," he said during a trip to Staten Island's Ocean Breeze section.

According to the New York Post, these homes will be added to the 420 in Oakwood Beach and 613 in Suffolk County that will be up for buyout, thanks to federal grant funding. The Post adds that the state plans to use the properties as coastal buffers, or simply open space.
