Emily Thompson, who wrote The Soundscape of Modernity, wants you to step into a time machine for a brief moment. Thompson and designer Scott Mahoy have created The Roaring Twenties, an online blast from the past which treats users to the sounds of prohibition-era New York City.

Though many of the sounds were actually recorded between 1930 and 1933, the project proves that the city was just as busy and loud back then as it is now.
