Wonders never cease: Drakengard 3, the third game in a series that arguably very few people in the US have even heard of, is getting a North American release next year for the PS3. For those unfamiliar with the series, it’s a bizarre action-RPG series from Square, and more importantly for this game in particular, it’s directed by Nier’s Yoko Taro, who made Nier.

Nier is another strange Square title that amazingly saw a Western release – think a traditional action-RPG, splice it with a bullet hell shooter, throw in innumerable genre homage moments that completely change the game’s tone, not to mention a cast of post-archetypal characters in a weird and witty script. At one point it also does this. It's probably better just experienced for yourself.

Nier and Drakengard are supposedly linked, if not directly via narrative then certainly by philosophy and oddity. (Drakengard 3, for its part, has a protagonist that appears to have a flower as an eyepatch.)

That said, any game related to Nier that makes it to America is a game worth playing.
