Director: Dziga Vertov

Russian visionary Dziga Vertov's Man with a Movie Camera is an undeniable testament to film's unique abilities. Literature and theater provide distinctive views of our world, but Vertov knew that a camera offers something much more open to singular interpretation. Using a tactic known as double exposure (objects can change size or appear beneath other objects), he distorted reality, filming everyday occurrences (birds flying, cars driving) from daring angles. He's like the patron saint to women who prefer watching porno over reading romance novels. —MB
