With the school year right around the corner, returning and incoming University of Iowa students have something to look forward to: Getting hammered beyond belief. That's because the Princeton Review has christened the school America's leading institution for partying. A list was arranged according to a nationwide poll of 126,000 students, with an average of 333 students per campus being asked 80 questions about a variety of subjects.
Iowa City officialls are pissed off about the ranking because they've been fighting binge drinking on the university's campus and downtown. Still, school spokesman Tom Moore told Fox News that the Princeton Review was right in characterizing the University of Iowa as a Big Ten school where students enjoy hitting the bottle with the same vigor that they do the books: "That indicates they are balancing their academic responsibilities with their social pursuits," Moore said.
Fox News notes that the University of Iowa's ranking is inconsistent with data which suggests that students are actually drinking less. According to Fox News, data released this year shows that while the percentage of students who reported drinking in the last 30 days was above the national average, it still at the lowest it had been in 20 years. The rest of the top 10 party schools include the University of California, Santa Barbara, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, West Virginia University, Syracuse University, the University of Florida, Ohio University, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Penn State University and Lehigh University.
