Notable TV roles: Stephen Holder, The Killing (AMC)

The Killing came into the game as a sophisticated take on the types of murder a procedural crime show would toss off casually. Before long, viewers realized it was full of itself, not half of what it claimed to be. Still, if you stuck around, you stuck around for one reason: Joel Kinnaman’s hypnotic performance as Detective Holder. We’d never seen a cop like him, with his goonish drawl, laid-back persona, and unorthodox methods (toking up with high school girls to get information). The best thing about The Killing’s cancellation was that it’d free him up to find a better job elsewhere. Then it came back.
