After the arguably disastrous results of Dead Space 3 and Resident Evil 6, survival horror fans should be eagerly anticipating The Evil Within, the latest (and, reportedly, the last) game from Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami (who is allegedly retiring following the game’s completion). Evil Within looks like a Lovecraftian mix of old-school Silent Hill, Resident Evil 4 and a bit of Clock Tower, with an emphasis on ammo rationing, makeshift trap building and tense moments where you’re alternatingly running away or combating your own psyche.
You won’t find any of that in the disturbing teaser released for E3 this week, which eschews gameplay scenes for quick-cut live action shots of barbed wire, mutilated corpses and untold horrors workshopping murder devices to strains of classical music. (If you want to see some actual and very brief gameplay, check it out here.)
From what we saw of Evil Within at E3, which followed a detective trying to escape a butchery from a grotesque hulk with a chainsaw chasing you throughout a dilapidated asylum, it seems like a great return to form for Mikami. If it is really his last game, it’s shaping up to be one hell of an exit. Get ready to be disturbed watching the video below.
