Just like every other superhero movie these days, Man of Steel was a massive box office hit despite so-so reviews. As of this morning it was already at $196.7 million and set a record for best June opening ever. Iron Man 3 is the only thing that's beat it so far this year.
“Man Of Steel beat all expectations,” a Warner Bros exec said. “Interesting note that Superman’s Saturday gross is double the next ranking Top 4 films added together. That’s really dominating the marketplace." On the other side of the spectrum, The Bling Ring made $210,000 on just five screens in New York and Los Angeles.
That isn't good enough to beat Spring Breakers ($263,000 in only three theaters), but it's Sofia Coppola's biggest opening since Lost in Translation. And to be fair, that had Bill Murray in it.
