Yesterday was a huge day for LGBTQ rights in America: parts of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) were struck down and ruled unconstitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court. SCOTUS also opened the door for gay marriage to resume in California, America's most populous state, by letting a lower court's ruling stand that struck down Prop. 8, which defines marriage as between a man and woman.
For those who flocked to the world's top search engine to look up details on the news, Google had a nice surprise waiting for those who typed in 'gay' or 'gay pride': the search bar that is normally thin and black was turned into a rainbow. The rainbow had actually been there for a few weeks already for LGBTQ Pride Month, but many hadn't noticed until yesterday's big news came in. If users typed in 'Stonewall,' they were sent to the rainbow page as well, in commemoration of the Stonewall Riots of the 1969 in NYC, which were a series of riots against police that is considered the most important event that lead to the gay liberation movement.
