Bridesmaids director Paul Feig defended Melissa McCarthy on Twitter today, telling much-hated New York Observer critic Rex Reed to go fuck himself.

For his catty and school bully name-calling of the supremely talented Melissa McCarthy, I cordially invite Mr. Rex Reed to go fuck himself.

Reed is often controversial and hates lots of great movies, so we really shouldn't be surprised that in his review of McCarthy's new movie Identity Thief, he calls her "tractor-sized," a "female hippo," and a "gimmick comedian who has devoted her short career to being obese and obnoxious." Regardless of whether he liked the movie or not, why the name calling? It's par for the course for Reed, but many people are asking (and have been for years) why Reed still has a job. We have an idea: page views.

Another example of Reed's insanity: he once called croque monsieurs "a nauseating farrago of flayed pig muscle and fermented cow extract" in a review for Amélie when in fact they are the most delicious sandwiches this side of grilled cheese.

Anyway, Feig stood up for her, and even if Identity Thief is the worst movie ever (doubtful), McCarthy is awesome. In addition to Bridesmaids, Feig has directed episodes of The Office, Parks and Recreation, 30 Rock, Arrested Development, and Mad Men. He was also Sabrina's science teacher in Sabrina the Teenage Witch. So clearly, he is also awesome—Paul Feig FTW.
