Busted: Thousands of NYC Taxi Drivers Have Been Overcharging Passengers for Trips to the 'Burbs

Got 'em.

None

In the shock of the century, 1,320 taxi drivers were caught overcharging passengers for trips to the suburbs. Back in 2010, it was discovered that 35,558 (75 percent) of NYC's licensed cab drivers ripped a passenger off at least once. A more recent study of cab fares and GPS data found that those 1,320 drivers overcharged 1,936 passengers last year alone. However, it should be noted that 1,097 of the drivers were only guilty of one overcharge, which suggests that they were accidental.

Accident or not, cab drivers should know how to properly use their equipment at this point. The TLC says that it has brought charges for each instance of overcharging, and that over 30 percent of the cases have been settled by the drivers paying the associated fines.
